A Life Insurance (L&H) agent (in some states, and referred to as a “Certified Life Agent”) sells Life Insurance, Incontinence, Disability, and long-term care policies to individuals and groups. L&H agents are brokers that sell the products of various insurance companies. Life Insurance is a contract between an individual or group of individuals and an insurance company. The policy provides coverage from death, disability, illness, or death. A life insurance policy may be for one term or for an indefinite period.
To become licensed as an agent, a person needs to meet state requirements, complete education courses, pass written examinations, and take a final examination. Each state has different educational requirements and licensing criteria. L&H licensees need to meet state requirements that are a few basic to become an agent. Most L&H agents need a minimum of five years of experience as an insurance broker in order to apply for a state license. Other requirements may vary by state.
In order to be licensed as an L&H, an individual must pass the state requirement that he or she complete education courses and pass the state exam. In order to apply for a state license as an L&H, an individual must first complete all of the required courses. Then, in addition to completing the education courses, he or she must successfully pass the state exam. In many states, if the L&H agent fails to pass the state exam, he or she may not be able to reapply for the licensing in the future. Therefore, it is very important to pass the state exam.
It is very important to know what to expect during the licensing process. One of the most common questions asked at the state exam will focus on the areas of life and health that the prospective agent will need to understand. For example, the exam questions will focus on knowing the difference between life policies, term life policies, universal life policies, variable life policies and whole life policies. The exam questions also will focus on understanding insurance tax issues.
The first step to becoming an L&H agent is to complete the education requirements that must be met by each state. There are four steps to fulfilling the licensing requirements in each state. The first step is to complete the required course work from an accredited university or institution of higher education, complete the required pre-licensing courses and pass the state exam.
Once an individual has completed the education requirements, the next step is to successfully complete the pre-licensing courses. Each state will have a pre-licensing course that must be completed and approved before the L&H can apply for a state license. Insurance exam pass rates will vary among states. Students who successfully pass the state exam will then be required to take a national licensing examination. Students who pass the national licensing examination will be able to apply for state licenses at the federal level after having graduated.
The final step in the process is the state exam. Students will be required to sit for the exam based on their study calendar. Students who study for the exam during the summer months should plan on taking a few extra hours to prepare. Students who study for the exam in the winter should also take additional study time to prepare for the exam.
