Barenaked Ladies was a Canadian folk/rock band formed in Scarborough, Ontario in 1988. The band quickly gained a cult following in Canada, thanks to their self-titled 1991 demo album, which was the first ever independent release to earn gold in Canada. The songs on this album still remain favorites to this day. Since then Barenaked Ladies have gone on to sell over forty-five million records worldwide. The success of Barenaked Ladies has led to several other successful careers for the group members, most notably lead singer Jannick Johnson who has gone on to have hits with such bands as The Killers and Mumford & Son, as well as having albums sold by artists like David Bowie and Pink Floyd.

The band’s biggest hit “Bodysaint” reached No. 7 on the charts in Canada. The original version of this song included the lyrics “I’m a bad boy, I’m a bad boy good for a girl” which referred to Johnson’s status as a drug addict. The version that reached the top spot also featured background vocals from an unidentified male.

Barenaked Ladies Songs Lyrically, there are few songs that can be categorized as a “good” song. Some of the more melodic songs have a tendency to have the lead guitarist sing in a falsetto rather than holding his own melody notes. During the song’s bridge, John Bollen plays his nylon-string bass with a pick. This is quite rare for a rock band at the time, although it sounds cool. Instead, he opts for his nylon string acoustic guitar instead. This makes for a striking contrast between the clean melody notes of the main melody and the darker bass sounds that characterize most bass solos of the time. It is Bollen’s choice. The guitar solo is played mostly on the electric guitar instead of the nylon-string bass.

“Hound Dog” is Barenaked Lady’s third song and definitely their strongest song to date. The music is very energetic and features a great variety of sounds. The bass guitar is hard hitting and the drums are also hard hitting. Lead guitar works with the drums in many ways. The song is played on the second guitar and contains a heavy dose of distortion as well. Both the lead guitar and the drums work with the other members of the band in a very fluid manner.
