The Best of Comedy Movies

If you are a fan of comedy movies, then you no doubt have watched or heard of the above mentioned genre. The first comedy movie I can recall seeing was Ben Hur. This film follows Jesus who is on a voyage of self-exploration. He visits different countries and thus learns that the natives have nothing to fear from him as he is “the one” carrying the sin of “blaspheminess.” The theme of this movie is that every person in the world has something that others do not. This is what separates humanity from the other creatures in the world.

Another comedy classic that I recently saw was Home on the Range. This is an award winning film that depicts a man’s (Ethan Hawke) home life after he returns from military service. After several years, he returns to live in rural America, where things do not go well. His social skills are tested when he reunites with an old friend from his past. This is a wonderful comedy classic that is worth the time spent to see it.

One comedy classic that I am sure any man would include in their list of comedy classics is The Shop Around You. In this film, George Clooney plays a single father who travels across the country in pursuit of his daughter. Along the way, he bumps into a variety of unlikely people and encounters problems along the way that he needs to solve. This film offers a modern day take on the road trip genre and is a great example of how cinema can use humor to solve problems. It also showcases one of the best films of 2021, The Informant!

There is also this other great comedy classic, Cape Fear. This film depicts the last days of the World War II at the tail end of the movie, as U.S. soldiers are forced out of the Triangle by the Japanese army. A real story, this film is a definite must see…

Another fantastic comedy classic is Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The movie involves two high school students who accidentally create an entrance into a secret government experiment. Once there, they are immediately strapped into an alternate universe where they are the most powerful being around. This film is pure hilarity…which makes it a must see for any Bill & Ted fan. Plus, starring Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, this film just has to be seen.

One more classic comedy classic is It’s a Wonderful Life. Shot in and around California during the early days of the Cold War, this film follows the life of George Bailey (John C. Maxwell) and the women in his life. Captured with a German prisoner of war, George has no idea what he’ll be doing once he’s released. With the help of his friend played by Ed Harris, George ends up accomplishing a number of crazy assignments…that include helping to save the world, while at the same time enjoying himself. The performances of all involved are what make this a must see…along with the beautiful score.

When it comes to comedies, no list of great comedies can exist without including A Few Good Men. Starring Denholm Elliott and Kevin Dunn, this film is a hilarious comedy that centers on the life of a wronged man (Elliott) who becomes the head of a big company…only to find that his good intentions lead to bigger problems. One of the more successful film comedies ever made, A Few Good Men provides another dose of pure comedy…and one that is sure to be a hit with young and old alike.

Of course, some films never get old. There are always films like Old Yeller, Casablanca, or Grease…and those are just a few of the best ever made…but there are others, like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Rear Window, or On the Waterfront…which is sure to make you glad you caught the classic that is Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But if you’re looking for a true classic, you should definitely check out The Deerhunter. A true film classic.
